Bradford SI Fund Raiser for Project Sierra

President Nora and Revd Dr George Williams circulate at the Sierra Leone evening.

Bradford SI recently held an Evening of Sierra Leone Food & Culture at St Peter’s Church in Allerton. The food was prepared by SI member Beatrice Williams ably assisted by her husband – the vicar, Revd Dr George Williams. As Beatrice and George are from Sierra Leone, the food was genuine, wonderful, and enjoyed by all. After tucking into peanut stew, couscous, beef stew, plantains, black-eyed beans and rice it was generally agreed that Beatrice needs to write a cookery book, with proceeds going to Project Sierra obviously!

The evening started-off with an exhibition of Sierra Leonean artifact and paintings by Revd George Williams. This was followed by prayers and a formal welcome of the guests by SI Bradford’s president, Canon Nora Whitham, MBE. There was a tombola and raffle which were followed by speeches made by Andrea Hunt, the Soroptomist International Co-ordinator, who not only expanded on the current programmes of the organization in the country but also its plans for the future, especially in the areas of education, training and health. Revd Williams also provided an insight into the current level of development in the country and thanked the members of Soroptomists International for their generosity and love for Sierra Leone. The vote of thanks was given by Mrs Beryl Eakin JP and over £540 was raised in just one night! That’s fantastic.

Many thanks to Mrs Betty Robertshaw, Dr Eileen Senior, Miss Isobel Templeton JP and Mrs Beatrice Williams for organising a fantastic evening.
