March Zoom Meeting
We were treated to a slideshow and talk by Elaine and Debbie on their trip to Nepal. They had joined an organised trip to Everest Base Camp and the description of their outward journey, overnight stays and trek with all the sights and sounds was really fascinating.
Their overriding motivation had been to support Breast Cancer research and they had raised the amazing amount of £23.700. They also managed to visit an education centre which had been supported by a Soroptimist Federation project, and they saw the impressive vocational training that the young women were receiving.
Soroptimists were welcomed from other Clubs and everyone thanked Debbie and Elaine for such an enjoyable evening.
Annual General Meeting
On 21st May we held the Club’s AGM on zoom and everyone thanked outgoing Joint Presidents Sue and Jo, and welcomed Deborah as our new Club President.
Earlier in the day, Jo presented Deborah with her chain of office and Jo received her Past President’s badge.
Climate Pathfinders
We were joined for our June zoom meeting by four members of Climate Pathfinders, High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. This is a new group formed to find an alternative way of promoting and supporting environmental matters, because members are under 18 with as yet no vote. We were given a talk and presentation on the group’s aims and objectives, and their passion for the cause shone through.
The group’s priorities are : Take Local Action Tell Decision Makers Spread the Word.
Soroptimists offered to help and support wherever we could.
Members were fascinated at the July Zoom business meeting to find out about the work of Transition Buxton. Robin Edwards, one of their five Directors gave a slide show and talked about their aims and achievements. The group runs monthly repair cafes at the Buxton Methodist church, and arranges for recycling bins (for hard to recycle items such as crisp packets) to be placed in Buxton supermarkets. Their theme of resilience very much echoes the work of the Soroptimists themselves. Sadly, much of this work halted during the lockdowns.
The particular project which Robin illustrated is the Community Orchard. Sites across Buxton have been successfully used to create the orchard, with fruits such as pears, apples, plums and gages, available for anyone to eat and enjoy. Eighty trees in total are now thriving across the town. Robin was thanked by President Deborah, and it is hoped that the two organisations will work together in the future, as Soroptimists are planting trees worldwide.
Unveiling of Sculpture at the National Memorial Arboretum
On Saturday 18 September, some Buxton Club members travelled to the National Memorial Arboretum to attend the unveiling of the Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland sculpture.
Soroptimist International was well represented at the National Arboretum on Remembrance Sunday. wreaths were laid and the Soroptimist pledge of peace was read
A FUN CHRISTMAS PARTY !!
Our lovely dinner evening at Cavendish Golf Club started with a candlelighting ceremony for the Federations of Soroptimist International and remembering Human Rights for all.
