I have been volunteering all my adult life and wanted to join Soroptimists because supporting women and girls locally, nationally and internationally was very appealing. Moving to Buxton, I also wanted to make new friends and I plan to make this a fun year for us all with the hope that we will soon be able meet face-to-face again.
SI Buxton & District currently has 24 members. We also have expressions of interest in joining from one or two other ladies within the local community. So, all in all, a healthy membership for the size of our community and equalling that of some distinctly larger places in the region.
Our club was chartered on 8th May 1972 and we are very proud still to have our founder members with us.
As a club we are very welcoming, friendly and supportive of each other as the ‘sisterhood’ aspect of Soroptimism is the most important feature for us, something which can get overlooked a little as we all rush around in our busy lives completing our service and Programme Action activities.
We are very much a fun loving group, and before coronavirus we enjoyed frequent social activities such as trips to the theatre in Manchester or Buxton’s very own lovely Opera House and occasionally weekend trips to fascinating places in the UK.
We’ve also enjoyed some memorable visits to our friendship links in neighbouring Stockport and further afield to Kirteminde in Denmark.
Members have the option to attend our quarterly East Midlands region meetings in Loughborough, and our annual Federation Conference held in a different venue each year is always incredibly inspiring as well as being lots of fun.
Anyone interested in joining us is extremely welcome to join our zoom meetings and before too long to come along to a business and dinner meeting to see what we are all about, before making a definite commitment.
