Home-Start Blanchardstown has supported families in the Dublin 15 area for the last 35 years, both in home visiting by volunteers and by running a respite crèche. Home-Start Blanchardstown is part of a world wide network of services operating in 22 countries. Arguably in this service, along with others, childcare workers need to adapt lifestyle choices that enhance their wellbeing.
SI Dublin member Mariandy Lennon author of the book “Breathing Through Life” facilitated the workshop for the staff of Home-Start.
It was a total Health & Wellness immersion. It started with an interactive talk about self-care and how this is empowering people especially women who are overwhelmed by attending to daily cares – especially combining family life and career.
The holistic trilogy was presented as important cornerstones to maintaining good health. These are nutrition, exercise and mental outlook.
Breathwork was introduced as a tool of first aid because of its efficacy and directly affecting the nervous system and the brain function which can lead to relief. This is now researched on by scientists worldwide – like Dr Huberman, a neuro scientist from Stanford University.
Mariandy demonstrated different breathing techniques based on methods learned from a Tibetan Monk back in the 1980’s, which she herself has been practicing. Different breathing techniques were then practiced with the participants to help manage stress, insomnia, physical and emotional pain when alone and waiting for help.
The participants responded well and the coordinator Ann gave thanks to SI Dublin for organising this Health & Wellness Program for all the female staff.
