Fairtrade Big Brew

On Saturday 9th March President Jane Griffiths and Anne Richards organised the Soroptimist cake stall at the Fairtrade Big Brew at Lingfield Community Centre

Friday 8th March was International Women’s Day and East Grinstead Soroptimists chose it as the day to launch their Anti Spiking Campaign in some of the East grinstead pubs. By providing protectors for glasses and bottles it is hoped that it will reduce drinks being spiked.

At our meeting on Wednesday 6th March we were delighted to welcome Richard Leman, OBE, to our club. Richard is East Grinstead born and bred and has been involved in the running of East Grinstead Sports Club since 1988. He delivered a very entertaining, and at times emotional talk. He outlined his story as part of the GB Olympic hockey team, from winning the bronze medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 to winning the gold medal in Seoul in 1988. Much to our delight we were able to handle both medals. We all felt very honoured to be able to do this, and to share the emotion that these medals meant to Richard. During his career he earnt 228 caps and although hockey players are not presented with a physical cap for each occasion he also showed us the actual caps he had been given. The talk was very amusing and really told us what his life had been like during his Olympic years.

At the same meeting we were treated to some Olympic style snacks by member Janet Doyle. Janet is running the London Marathon on April 21st in aid of Pancreatic cancer. Her lovely food was a thank you, or as she said a “bribe” to sponsor her on this mammoth event! We all wish her well and look forward to hearing her story after the event.
