Who We Are
Working local to global with Soroptimists near and far, we’re get involved with projects and organisations which, empower and support:
- Womens facing violence or conflict; women building peace
- Womens’ education/ learning and getting an education
- Womens’ economic empowerment – helping women to support themselves financially
- Womens’ health (including mental health) and food security
- Womens’ environment: a healthy planet
Projects are chosen by club members and are linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They include mentoring vulnerable women in East London to become budding businesswomen, supporting East London womens’ refuges and in assisting initiatives to combat human trafficking and modern slavery. We work in partnership with Soroptomists all over the world – for example in Calcutta we’ve worked with fellow Soroptomists improving womens’ safety. Internationally we are involved with projects in Sierra Leone and in Kenya both of which empower women economically and work against FGM.
Soroptimist International has consultative status at the United Nations, meaning that all the work we do, whether right here in East London or further afield, can have an impact at the very height of international affairs, the United Nations.
Women and girls will achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide.
Soroptimists transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities.
The principles of Soroptimism are to strive for: • The advancement of the status of women • High ethical standards • Human rights for all • Equality, development and peace and • The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace
