The Club supported the International President’s December 10th Appeal for ‘See Solar, Cook Solar’, by selling pre-loved scarves and jewellery, home made preserves, and holding a raffle at the club meeting on that date. A total of £306.06 was raised.
SI Glasgow City’s hands-on project is Tomorrow’s Women Today. This is a project run at the Adelphi Centre is a ground-breaking project, which is designed to stop offenders being trapped in the revolving door of jail. The Gorbals centre offers a multi-agency approach, with a consultant psychologist, two mental health nurses, addiction experts and social workers. And on secondment are a prison officer and a housing officer. SI Glasgow City provides lunches and toiletries. Here is a picture of SI Glasgow City’s Christmas gifts for Tomorrow’s Women Today. All nicely wrapped up and ready for delivery. are 15 gifts, each containing a Christmas card, chocolate, toiletries, nail polish and fluffy socks. We shall also deliver some of our usual donations of toiletries and groceries.
The club was delighted to welcome its newest member, Violet, on 22 October 2014. Her badge was presented to her by President Fiona.
Glasgow City members were joined by members of their friendship link club of Newcastle Upon Tyne, for an enjoyable day out at Abbotsford House on 28 June 2014. We were given a tour of the house, and then had lunch and ‘a chat’ in the café.
Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 Glasgow hosted the 20th Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 3 August. Members of Glasgow City were involved as ‘Clydesiders’, Hosts and Spectators, but the star of the show as far as the club was concerned was Moira Ord who carried the baton . Club members Bernadette, Janneke and President Fiona are pictured at the ‘Big Green Box’ in Glasgow on Wednesday 23 July 2014. The box was about forced street crime. They collected over 360 signatures for a petition asking Kenny McAskill for a specific Scottish bill on trafficking.
Pictured is the Tomorrow Women Banner which was unveiled at the launch of Tomorrow’s Women Glasgow which took place at the Adelphi Centre Glasgow on Wednesday 25th June 2014. Tomorrow’s Women Glasgow is an innovative and unique Multi Agency Scottish Government funded Centre based in Gorbals Glasgow. It works with women with complex needs who are involved in the Criminal Justice system. It offers a safe place to talk about their needs and to address issues that prevent them from living positive, healthy lives. SI Glasgow City are working in partnership with the Centre which includes providing much needed food items and toiletries on a regular basis. The key speaker at the launch was Kenny McAskill, Cabinet Secretary for Justice at the Scottish Parliament.
Glasgow City Council honoured Soroptimist International President Ann Garvie at a reception in the City Chambers on Wednesday 11 December 2013. President Ann is a member of Soroptimist International Glasgow City. Bailie Margot Clark, representing The Lord Provost congratulated Ann on her international role and said: “Wherever there are strong women, there is hope. It’s a privilege to have an institution like Soroptimist International in our city. I am a great supporter of their values and life-changing work.”
