Food Poverty Action Project – Project Update
We are half way through our 2 year project to help eliminate hunger by working with other organisations to ensure families have sufficient food to eat a healthy diet every day.
Fund Raising
So far we’ve raised over £4000. Some directly to Trussell Race Against Hunger and a Concert for Resurrected Bites . And the rest distributed to our local food banks in Wetherby and District Foodbank, Harrogate District Foodbank , Salvation Army Ripon & St Cuthbert’s in Nidderdale & Resurrected Bites Community Shop.
Bring a Tin
More than half a tonne (500kgs) from our ‘Bring A Tin’ to meetings been distributed to Food Banks.
Giving Service
We’ve given nearly a thousand hours of service in various capacities, from volunteering at Resurrected Bites Pay as you Can cafes, manning stalls at Christmas Markets and Car Boot Sale, garden parties, and a lot of knitting and baking.
Raising Awareness
We have raised awareness about the impact of hunger with our prospective parliamentary candidates in all three constituency’s our Club covers. We will be contacting our sitting MPs about Child Poverty and the increasing need for people to use food banks.
Helping others
We know that the money and donations we’ve made are equivalent to help stave hunger for about over 400 people for 3 days. Food Banks aren’t the answer to poverty but with 1 in 7 children (over 4 million children) living in poverty we can’t turn a blind eye.
Soroptimist Response
Many Soroptimist Clubs across the UK are supporting Food Banks, running cafe’s & cookery courses etc. We need to use our collective voice to influence on social policy issues affecting women and children.. The gap between income and the cost of living is affecting so many families especially children and one parent families.
