Charity Shop Christmas Shop Window Competition brings Christmas Cheer

It must be Christmas when the annual Christmas shop window competition takes place. Harrogate and District Soroptimists are once again delighted to organise the  Charity Shop Window Competition; it was great to see so many shops getting involved. There were some super displays that really demonstrated innovation, impact and the spirit of Christmas. The judges were impressed in the time, effort and thoughtfulness that had gone into many of the windows. The winners were invited to the Harrogate Borough Mayor’s parlour in Harrogate on the 29th November to receive their certificates. The overall winner, Saint Michael’s Starbeck also received the Soroptimist International Shop Window Cup from President Pat Shore and the Cllr Nick Brown, the Mayor of Harrogate. Harrogate and District Soroptimists have had a very busy 3 days at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show at the Great Yorkshire Show Ground.  Over 37000 people visited the show and apart from heavy rain on the Friday morning the sun shone bright. Our Meru Garden recreated a little bit of Meru in Yorkshire. It tells the story of how the Meru Women’s Garden project supports women to develop the skills and knowledge to create a ‘garden’ that is productive and will give them an income as well as food to feed their families.       We manned our garden throughout the 3 days. We met some fantastic people from all over the world including people from Kenya and those who used to live in Kenya. We were delighted to hear from them how authentic they thought the garden was. The Club’s AGM held on the 15th of April celebrated the hard work of out-going President Andrea Trimmer and the  Club members. Though the final sum is to be confirmed President Andrea announced that £3000 had been raised over the last year for ‘The Young Carers Mentorship Scheme’; this included over a £1000 raised by The Square Restaurant from the Cookery School,  £840 from a night of fun at the Murder Mystery Event as well as money from a very enjoyable Thai Lunch, selling refreshments at the Wesleyan Church in Harrogate and not forgetting the Le Tour evening in honour of the Grand Depart. The amount equates to 120 hours of mentorship that really makes a difference to young people who care for their parents or siblings across Harrogate and District.
