Janet Hodgson, Assistance Programme Director Learning Opportunities, introduced reports from three Clubs on their Projects:
SI Kodaikanal
No one from SI Kodaikanal was able to attend Conference, so they sent a film to showcase their project on Relationships Education in Schools. This project resulted from the 2012 SIGBI Programme Resolution to investigate Relationships Education in Schools. Using art and drama the Club invited students from three schools to look at their relationships with themselves, their families and their peers, and understand what makes a healthy relationship and what makes an unhealthy relationship.
SI Barbados
SI Barbados gave a presentation on their New Horizons Project. This Project was started in 1993 at the Female Unit of the Government Industrial School, a reform institution for juvenile offenders.
Each Saturday, as a part of the NHP, members of SI Barbados as well as various resource persons conduct workshops at the school in a number of areas. The goal of the workshops is to empower and enable the girls to reach their goals in life. Currently, there are 15 female residents between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age housed at the school.
One workshop was conducted by Ebonnie Rowe, the founder of Honey Jam Barbados, a performing arts group. The artistes spoke about their personal journeys to Honey Jam, and the residents of the school took part in some singing. They were excited to think that this could be a career path.
SI Llandudno
SI Llandudno gave a presentation on their Bee Project in local schools. They raised funds to provide Educational Resource Packs for teachers and also visited the schools as part of the “Mini-Beast” curriculum. The Club provided honey and other food samples such as tomato sauce, baked beans and strawberry jam, which are all pollinated by Bees, to demonstrate to the children the link between everyday foods and household items such as Beeswax candles, polish and toiletries like lip balm and soap.
SI Llandudno paid the travelling expenses for beekeepers to visit 3 schools in Llandudno. The Beekeeper took a transporter with 2000 bees and a Queen bee which can be viewed through glass sides. Children learned the importance of bees and pollination.of crops.
