Planting a Rowan Tree for the Jubilee and Centenary
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. The initiative invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.
On Sunday 16th January 2022, the SI Hertford and District members gathered at Hertford Castle grounds to mark the Queen’s Jubilee initiative. With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC encourages planting of trees. Tree planting leaves a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation. Furthermore, planting trees will benefit future generations as well as the environment.
EHDC
East Herts District Council gave us the technical support we needed. They secured permissions and researched the right tree for the Hertford Castle environment. We chose a Rowan tree, due to the proximity to the historic Ice House. It was the right choice as it has small roots and not likely to egress into the Ice House.
Twinning
Our President lead the honour of planting to mark the SI Hertford and District Soroptimist Centenary celebration, as part of the QGC. The Rowan will bring colour and shade in the summer to the Castle grounds. To emphasise its placement, it sits alongside a twin planted the same day, by Community Development Action (CDA). We are both on the QGC map, take a look by Zooming into Hertford on the map.
Planting
Kate Belinis DL (our SI Hertford and District President) was joined by Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss CBE CStJ DL, Mayor of Hertford Councillor Bob Deering and the Chair of East Herts District Council Councillor Ken Crofton.
Thank you to everyone, including our esteemed guests, who braved the cold and enjoyed the crisp sunshine. Essentially, we commemorated the Jubilee year by planting our Rowan tree. As a result of the planting, we intend to erect a plaque showing the Centenary celebration for the Soroptimists.
