United Nations – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women & Girls

On the 25th November Soroptimist International Jersey will join with her sister clubs worldwide to acknowledge the official  UN day commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls.  We will promote 16 days of Activism concluding on Human Rights Day on the 10th December.  We propose to walk through town on the preceding Saturday – 22nd November.

Gender based violence is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights’ violations in our world today, and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline.  It affects women regardless of their age, background or level of education.  It takes many forms, including physical, sexual or psychological violence, as well as  economic abuse and exploitation.

The colour Orange has been chosen to represent our outrage at the violence being perpetrated, but also to signal our hope and optimism for a brighter and better future.  Every effort invested in preventing this violence and abuse is seen as a step towards a safer, more equal, and prosperous world.  We will be marching through the town on Saturday the 22nd November, being the closest day to the UN commemorative day,  to show our solidarity with women and girls worldwide.

We are delighted that the Fort Regent Dome and the Town Hall will be illuminated Orange for the whole of the 16 day period  by way of highlighting this important event.

We will assemble at West’s Centre @ 11.15am on Saturday 22nd November, and at 11.30am proceed up to Queen Street, down King Street to Charing Cross where we will retrace our steps back to West’s Centre.

We are delighted that Kate Wright, CEO of Freeda, will be marching with us and at the end will deliver a keynote speech on this important subject.  Her untiring work in Jersey on domestic abuse is impressive.

ALL ARE WELCOME – please join us, wear something orange, brings some bells or a tambourine, so everyone will hear us coming!

and show your support for this significant campaign.
