Building a network of volunteers who make reusable sanitary pads for refugees. Let’s stop period poverty together.
The Pachamama Project is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation growing a global network of volunteers to make reusable sanitary pads for refugees around the world dealing with period poverty. SI Libertas regulary makes donations to this project, recently to Lebanon. CEO Ella Lambert was a guest speaker at one of our meetings, Ella is very inspriing!
The Pachamama team has a mission to combat period poverty in refugee crises and make sure having a period is not yet another challenge for these vulnerable people.

What is Period Poverty?
Period poverty is the lack of availability and access to sanitary products, normally, due to financial constraints. This causes many women to resort to using scraps of tissue or even socks which can lead to infections.
Period poverty is a global issue, but the pandemic has shone a light on the most vulnerable in society. Our pads are easy to make and will, we hope, make a huge difference to people already facing unimaginable daily challenges. Having your period should not be one of those challenges.
We actively encourage young people in the UK, who may be interested in working in the not-for-profit sector in the future, to get involved with our project and build their skillset.
What does Pachamama mean?
Pachamama is the goddess of fertility and greatly revered by the indigenous people of the Andes. Pachamama is the Mother Earth of Inca mythology celebrated in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru. In a month-long celebration in August, people still celebrate her to this day.
Pachamama: A warm and charismatic image of sisterhood and the perfect figurehead for this UK registered charity.

Women in STEM
Recognising the problem of fewer women in STEM, we aim to take action by creating a survey to raise awareness of the issue. Research on the subject area. Educating, empowering and enabling, encouraging more women in STEM
What is this survey about? There are a number of initiatives being delivered to encourage girls into or continuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in primary school, high school and University. These education-based initiatives are having very positive effects and there has been an increase in the number of women furthering their STEM education. Between 2011 and 2021, the proportion of women in the UK entering full-time undergraduate courses taking STEM subjects increased from 33.6% to 41.4%. As a Soroptimist club we would like to understand whether support or change is needed in the next phase of a women’s life – her career. Do women feel able to continue their interests in a STEM subject through the workplace? Are there gender specific obstacles in the way of women establishing themselves in STEM fields of expertise? The purpose of this survey is to ask women who have studied at least one STEM subject either in High School or University a number of questions to understand whether there are common themes for why women leave STEM careers or never enter them in the first place. |
