DECEMBER COFFEE MORNINGS

Two very successful coffee mornings were held in Richmond Town Hall on 1st and 17th December to raise money for  the Kilamatindi Hospital in Tanzania which is one of our Club’s charities. The money raised will provide another solar panel for generating electricity in the hospital and for other essential equipment.

COMMUNITY QUIZ NIGHT:  12 October 2011

The King’s Head Hotel in Richmond Market Place was the place to be on the evening of 12 October when 80 people, Soroptimists and non-Soroptimists, came together for an evening of brain-stretching amusement and a light supper. The quiz raised £415 for one of the Club’s projects, to meet the cost of training a nurse at the Kilimatinde Hospital inTanzania and provide equipment. Earlier funding has enabled another nurse to receive a full 2- year training and to provide the hospital with electricity via solar panels.

SI RICHMOND AND DALES – WINNER OF THE 2011 MARY HILLARY AWARD

The Club has received this year’s Mary Hillary Award for its work raising funds and creating awareness of Women in Need, the charity started by Leah Pattison from Teesdale, which helps ill, destitute and homeless women in the Napper region of India. The award, given to the project that best reflects Soroptimist International’s vision and mission of helping women and children through advocacy, action and awareness, was presented by the Yorkshire regional president, Val Jenkins, at Askham Bryan College.  There were 117 projects considered for the award.

MORE MARKET-DAY PUBLICITY TO RAISE AWARNESS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE :  1 October 2011

Following our highly successful Saturday stall in Richmond Market Place in the summer, Club members  repeated the event on a gloriously sunny day in the early autumn. The event was equally  successful as the summer one had been and attracted a good deal of attention from young and older members of the public and made very useful contact with a number of organisations in Richmond and the surrounding area. Once again we were pleased to have our IDAS link member with us and, together, we handed out several hundred bookmarks and  leaflets

HISTORY WARDROBE PRESENTATION : 7 July 2011

One hundred and twenty guests enjoyed a whistle stop tour of fashion from 1940 to 1990, presented by the History Wardrobe.  Lucy Adlington and Lucy Ridley gave their usual hilarious, but historically accurate account of the changes in fashion which took place during this 50 year period.  Many members of the audience remembered these years, some of us in great detail, and many happy memories were brought to the surface and shared with others.

Members of SI R&D were joined by sister soroptimists from SI Durham, SI Darlington, and SI Walsall, and other family and friends.  An interesting and stimulating evening was had by all.

This evening was in aid of the Richmond Girls Football team and IDAS – Independent Domestic Abuse Services, for whom President Chris wishes to raise funds.  With the support of all our guests the wonderful sum of £764 was achieved, and this has been made up to £800 to be shared equally between the two organisations.

STOP PRESS  [October 2011]:   Members of the Richmond Girls’ Football Team  are  now  proud to wear their new ‘hoodies’ provided  by funds raised at our Club’s History Wardrobe event. The hoodies have the team name emblazoned  on the back and our Sally logo on the front.

MARKET-DAY PUBLICITY TO RAISE AWARNESS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE :  2 July 2011

As part of the Club’s campaign to raise awareness of the prevalence of Domestic Abuse that  occurs in all sections of society, Club members set up a stall in Richmond Market Place on a busy Saturday Market Day with posters and information provided by the Independent Domestic Abuse Services charity, IDAS. We distributed more than 400 book marks and leaflets and spoke to dozens of members of the public in what was an extremely successful outreach morning.

We work in partnership with IDAS and have taken on the quarterly awareness-raising campaign for the Richmond area.

RACE FOR LIFE : 12 June 2011

The sun shone as four members of SI Richmond and Dales – Angela Edwards, Shirley Dick. Chris Bowran and Elaine Walton – set off to South Park in Darlington to undertake the Race for Life. We joined 3,500 other women and children running or walking 5k. around the park to raise money for Cancer Research UK. It was a moving occasion as everyone remembered family members or friends, who are currently coping with cancer, have recovered following treatment, or have sadly died.  Money raised through sponsorship will go directly to Cancer Research UK to help them to continue their work.
Club members and friends were proud to be in Darlington on Sunday 12 June to support this cause.

The ceremony took place on the final day of the Regional Conference Meeting at Helmsley and was attended by several members of the Richmond and Dales Club.
