SI Dundee members celebrated Rabbie Burns Birthday with a virtual Burns Supper. Club Member, Sheila, recited the Selkirk Grace and the address to the Haggis was given by Margaret Bond. Some of the members toasted the occasion with a dram.

‘From November 25th– the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women- to December 10th, Human Rights Day, the United Nations UNITE Campaign: 16 Days of Activism to end Gender-based Violence is the time to galvanise action to end violence against women & girls. Blairgowrie Soroptimist, Jean Campbell, was keen to raise awareness about the issues and involve the local community, noting that orange is the colour chosen by the United Nations as a bright and optimistic colour to represent the campaign. Jean involved friends, family, local councillor Caroline Shiers and her daughter to attach orange ribbons & posters on the railings around the Wellmeadow (centre of Blairgowrie) and she asked shops to add an orange item / theme to their window displays along with posters & balloons for the 16 Days. Many shop owners & staff were keen to be involved. This is
Katie Lang and Pat Stewart Joint Regional Presidents 2020 – 2021 Katie and Pat are delighted to be sharing the role of joint Scotland North Regional President. We are both proud Soroptimists of around 14 years and hope to be able to visit all Scotland North clubs, albeit virtually, over the next year. The year 2020 has been a difficult year for clubs and members but we are delighted that clubs have been able to continue supporting women and girls locally, nationally and worldwide. Virtual meetings, events and socialising have been the order of the day and it is inspiring to see how well members have risen to the challenges of such a difficult year. We look forward to being able to meet again in person and resume more of our valuable work. In the meantime please feel free to contact either or both of
Due to the Covid pandemic this meeting on November 21st will be held over Zoom. For Agenda and joining information please see Region Meeting Information in the menu bar.
Past Region President and SI Dundee member Prue Watson, who is the Chair of Dundee Women’s Festival, decided to raise funds for next year’s Festival by taking part in the annual Dundee Kilt Walk. This is the second year Prue has taken part in the fundraising Walk. Due to the Covid pandemic and all the restrictions the Walk couldn’t happen in its usual format. Each participant had to organise their own route. Prue walked the 20 kilometres around Dundee taking approximately four hours and forty minutes, with a coffee stop at Dundee’s V&A en route. Prue raised £1005.31 which will be generously match funded by Sir Tom Hunter. Well done Prue.
Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic it was not possible for the clubs of Scotland North to meet together in person for their AGM and Regional Meeting. However, on Saturday September 19th, Regional President Katie welcomed thirty-three members from across the region through the wonders of Zoom. Once the business was complete a presentation of the Federation Project-Empowering Girls in Nepal- was given by Philip Holmes the CEO of ChoraChori. This was a most interesting talk by Philip, who explained that due to the pandemic much of the work with the young girls had been suspended. However, he went on to tell us how his charity had come to the aid of families living on the plains in the south of the country. Under normal circumstances the husband, who was the bread winner, would send money home from his employment in India, but due to
Usual club meetings have been cancelled across Scotland due to the coronavirus pandemic but this has not stopped clubs from staying in touch and doing their ‘bit’ to help those in need in our communities. SI Aberdeen and SI Dundee- have mastered the technology and members have met together across Zoom, a social media platform most of us had not heard off before lockdown. Gatherings across the internet such as this, although not the same as meeting over dinner and other club activities, have certainly meant lockdown has been tolerable. As well as business meetings, quizzes and just social ‘chit -chat’ have kept everyone connected. SI Aberdeen completed their collection of toiletries and stationary in support of a local charity Stella’s Voice, which works with vulnerable children and young people in Moldova . The club has been supporting the NHS through crocheting various helpful and
THEME: The Difference Women Can Make and Help Others to Make in Our Communities SPEAKER: Janette Devlin, Development Links Scotland- Training and Development Co-ordinator and Activate Tutor for Glasgow University. The aim of the evening was to explore how women could work in partnership to fulfil their interest in co- creating inclusive communities. Women can make a difference by working together in common goals. Through facilitation and interactive sessions ladies explored how they could empower and enable themselves to make that difference. SI Perth members were joined by Soroptimists from SI Crieff and SI Dundee. Many non Soroptimists attended the event too, which was very encouraging for the speaker and the organisers.
