WATER AID

Water Aid

On the eve of World Water Day, Skipton Soroptimists listened intently to a presentation by Susan Riley – a Volunteer Speaker from WaterAid – whose talk highlighted the plight of people living in remote areas of third world countries without a water supply.

Every minute, every day, people suffer and lives are lost needlessly because of a lack of safe water and sanitation. Water Aid is endeavoring to end this global crisis and transform lives.

Around 315,000 children under-five die every year from diarrheal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That’s 900 children per day. Diarrhea caused by dirty water and bad sanitation is the second biggest child killer worldwide. A lack of clean water and toilets keeps girls out of school, stops women from working, and traps people in poverty. Right now, the world’s poorest people do not have access to safe water, sanitation or hygiene. This crisis is ruining lives and holding back development, and is the second biggest child killer worldwide. A lack of clean water and toilets keeps girls out of school, stops women from working, and traps people in poverty.

WaterAid tackles the crisis from all angles. They work with local partners to deliver clean water and toilets and promote good hygiene, and campaign to make change happen for everyone everywhere. Everything they do is about getting safe water, sanitation and hygiene to everyone everywhere by 2030. They deliver services and make change happen.

They also tackle the reasons why millions of the world’s poorest people live without these most basic human services. With hundreds of partners in civil society, government and the private sector, they deliver water, sanitation and hygiene to those most in need and make transformational change happen so that governments across the world provide all of their citizens with affordable, sustainable services.

Skipton in Craven’s President, Mrs Betty Mendoza, presented a cheque for £1250 for WaterAid, one of her chosen charities. Mrs Christine Newson gave the vote of thanks.
