After months of chatting over Zoom, it was wonderful to finally meet our friends from SI Stafford in person on Saturday 19 September, for what turned out to be a fabulous, if rather wet, day in Liverpool.
Five members from Stafford, including President Michelle, made the journey by train to Lime Street Station, where they were met by members of SI St Helens at our usual rendezvous point, the iconic Ken Dodd statue. Despite the blustery weather, spirits were high as we set off on a walk to the Catholic Cathedral, affectionately known by locals as “Paddy’s Wigwam”.
Once inside, we took time to admire the stunning architecture, learn about its fascinating history, and appreciate the spiritual significance of this Liverpool landmark. Thankfully, by the time we emerged, the rain had eased, allowing us to continue our day a little drier than expected!
Our next stop was the famous Philharmonic Dining Rooms, where we had reserved a room for lunch. There we were joined by more members from St Helens, bringing our group to fifteen in total. Over a lovely meal, we shared what it means to be a Soroptimist, talked about the projects and causes close to our hearts, and discovered just how much we have in common. There was plenty of laughter, lots of chatter, and the kind of easy conversation that makes new friendships feel like old ones.
After lunch, we took the scenic route back through the city, passing the beautiful Georgian Quarter, the Bombed Out Church and the gardens surrounding St George’s Hall. Eventually, we parted ways at Central Library and the Walker Art Gallery, where our Stafford sisters planned to enjoy a coffee and explore a little more of Liverpool before heading home.
What began as a series of virtual meetings has quickly grown into a valued friendship link, and this memorable day was a fantastic start to what we hope will be many more adventures together. Here’s to strengthening our connection, sharing ideas, supporting one another, and creating lasting friendships through Soroptimism.
