Our Projects – Current

SEE CLUB NEWS PAGES FOR UP-TO-THE-MINUTE ACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

Soroptimist International of Stockport are delighted to be currently engaged in the following action and service projects:

Against Breast cancer (ABC) Bra Recycling Scheme

With bra collection bins appearing all over Stockport via SI Stockport, at the time of writing we have collected over 70kg of bras across the Borough.  Monies from the textile recycling companies go to ABC and re-usable bras go to women and girls in developing countries who have little or no access to the garment.

Independent Options Stockport

The Club is currently supporting Independent Options, Stockport who, ‘offer a wide range of highly personalised support services for children and adults who have a wide range of disabilities.’  The Club has provided gifts and toiletries for children and adults as well as developing the garden area into a usable and pleasant environment.

Purple Community Fund

The Club is collecting those fiddly ring pulls from aluminium cans for sending on to the Philippines where women are trained to make an income by upcycling the items into jewellery, handbags etc. for onward sale.

Toilet Twinning

With so many of the world’s population lacking basic sanitation and access to lavatories this is a simple yet effective project pertinent particularly for women and girls.

Water Aid

A fund matching scheme that aims to provide clean water to a world population that continues to have access only to dirty and diseased water supplies.

Stockport Without Abuse – Women’s Refuge

With women and children often entering the Stockport Refuge at very short notice and in crisis circumstances, this project provides welcome/dignity baskets that provide essential basic household and toiletry items.  Toys and clothes are also sometimes needed.

Wellspring

A project working with Wellspring (Stockport Homeless Centre) to help them provide for this vulnerable community. We have liaised with the Women’s Group and sought out their needs and wants and as a result craft skills have been developed along with social and team working skills.

The Club is represented on or active with other local organisations, among them:

The Battersby Trust (special housing for older people)

Stockport Talking Newspaper (for those with sight impairment or blindness)

GMP Video Unit – supporting witnesses and victims of crime in the interview environment

If you are interested in furthering our work in any of these areas or in helping us consider future projects why don’t you join us.

Our ongoing and regular support means a great deal to many organisations in the Borough.
