Existing Soroptimist members and partners from the South West and Channel Islands gathered at Tiverton Golf Club to celebrate our 60th Soroptimist Charter Anniversary. Greetings were received from our Friendship link clubs in Jersey, Gouda and Kobe. We are delighted to have been in existence this long. A certificate was presented to one of our members who had been a Soroptimist in Tiverton for 38 years.
A cake was cut by Daphne Dowsing our June Club President and Jackie Collins our Regional President. Our member Janine Sedman has been working with two other members on the history of our club for some time. Janine gave an excellent and informative talk. Janine explained the remarkable achievements of our twenty six founder members, who joined together in 1964 to set up a new Soroptimist International club right in the heart of Tiverton. Our club was led by notable local women. Our first club President, Mayoress Mrs Irene Dunsford, Vice President Miss Lenora Brown, Matron of Tiverton Hospital, led a team of visionary women, who laid the groundwork for empowerment, advocacy and community building. Their commitment and drive, which has shaped the vibrant fabric of our club. Their legacy inspires us to continue making a positive impact on the lives of women and girls in our community. We hope to meet at the Tiverton Golf Club with past members, where we will be arranging a cream tea to share memories of past events in Tiverton, Soroptimist Regional, National as well as International Conferences with memorabilia past and present. Our efforts were placed on social media brilliantly by our media officer and we were represented in the local paper. We will continue as we have always have, to support our chosen charities and to care for each other’s wellbeing. We hope to encourage new members to join us and we will continue to have Orange Cafes, to highlight the need to support women who suffer domestic abuse. We aim to have more social gatherings, whilst having fun together
