A Year of Dynamic Engagement and Growth

As a region, we are always looking for ways to evolve, connect, and make a meaningful impact. This year, thanks to Helen’s innovative leadership, we are embracing fresh approaches while maintaining our cherished traditions. Our annual meetings—usually held three to four times a year—are taking on an exciting new format. While we will still gather at our familiar and much-loved venue, the Aberavon Beach Hotel, for two of our meetings and one will be held online, we are also taking our meetings on the road!

One particularly exciting meeting will be hosted by Dŵr Cymru at the breathtaking Llys Y Fran Reservoir in Pembrokeshire, offering a scenic and inspiring backdrop for our discussions. Additionally, we are delighted to announce a special fun and friendship event at the Wales National Botanical Gardens in Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire—a perfect setting for members to connect and celebrate our shared purpose.

Strengthening Our Commitment to Cultural Engagement

Soroptimists are known for their dedication to fostering inclusivity and understanding, and this year, our region is strengthening partnerships to support and engage with women from diverse cultural backgrounds. Collaborating with Southwest Wales Connected Community Rail Partnership, Volcano Theatre Swansea, Race Council Cymru, and Swansea University, we are launching a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing our understanding and outreach.

Our first event in this programme will take place at the end of March, where members from our SI Clubs in South Wales will meet with a group of Nigerian mothers who have settled in and around Swansea. This gathering marks the beginning of what we hope will be an ongoing dialogue and support network. Furthermore, we have applied for funding to host a major cultural event at Volcano Theatre in September 2025, with another event anticipated in early 2026. These efforts align with our mission of empowerment, education, and advocacy.

Advocacy in Action: Addressing Domestic Violence in Wales

Last year, our members across Wales undertook a significant observational study, attending court hearings to assess the experience of domestic violence victims within the justice system. We observed proceedings in Cardiff, Llanelli, Newport, and Swansea, compiling a comprehensive report with findings and recommendations. Our efforts were met with great recognition, including a heartwarming letter from Queen Camilla, who expressed her admiration and gratitude for our work.

The impact of our research continues as we engage with key stakeholders to discuss and act upon our findings. As a natural progression of this initiative, we are exploring the development of an all-Wales resource booklet—both digital and printed—for women fleeing domestic violence. This project, still in its early stages, will involve collaboration with vital organisations such as Safer Merthyr Tydfil, Thrive Neath Port Talbot, Swansea Women’s Aid, and local police forces to ensure it meets the needs of those who require it most.

Driving Change Through Local Initiatives

Beyond our regional efforts, SI Clubs across South Wales are tirelessly working on their own service projects, providing invaluable support to their communities through volunteering, advocacy, and fundraising events; as well as supporting women and girls globally. Their dedication and passion are the lifeblood of our organisation, ensuring that we continue to be a powerful force for good.

As we embark on this transformative year, we invite all our members to engage with these opportunities, share their ideas, and work together to create a lasting impact. With new collaborations, innovative initiatives, and a commitment to making a difference, Soroptimist South Wales is set to make 2025 a year of meaningful progress and empowerment for women and girls across the region.

Stay connected, stay inspired, and let’s continue making a difference—together.
