On 29th Saturday March 2025, something truly special happened in Swansea. Soroptimist International Wales South partnered with Community Rail South West Wales to host a joyful, culture-rich event for the Mums and Toddlers Foundation — and what unfolded was more than just a gathering. It was a celebration of connection, community, and Soroptimist service in action.
The event was generously hosted by Ebenezer Church, Swansea, who welcomed everyone with open arms — and plenty of tea, coffee, and warm support.
Building Community Through Service
With around 20 Nigerian mums and toddlers, 30 Soroptimist members from eight clubs across South Wales, and two men supporting the women’s group, the space was filled with powerful female energy, joy, and shared purpose. (Children were in addition to the 50+ attendees — and brought their own lively magic!)
President Helen (SI Wales South) and Eve Sherratt (Community Rail) gave heartfelt welcomes, while Jade Morgan from the Neighbourhood Policing Team of British Transport Police offered support and presence — reinforcing the bonds between community and service.
This event reflected the very heart of Soroptimist service: empowering women, uplifting families, and creating opportunities for genuine connection.
Global Goals, Local Action
This joyful occasion quietly but powerfully advanced the UN Sustainable Development Goals:
-
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Supporting emotional wellbeing, social connection, and belonging.
-
SDG 5: Gender Equality – Creating safe, inclusive spaces where women are celebrated and empowered.
-
SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – Bringing together cultures, reducing isolation, and building bridges.
-
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – A shining example of collaboration between Soroptimists, local organisations, and community leaders.
️ Sharing Food, Culture, and Laughter
Guests shared a table that reflected both Welsh and Nigerian heritage — with Bara Brith, Welsh Cakes, Jollof Rice with meat and plantain, cheese and biscuits, wraps, and fresh fruit. It wasn’t just a meal — it was a cultural exchange, enjoyed by all generations.
And then came the dancing.
Nigerian mums taught Soroptimist members traditional moves, filling the room with rhythm, laughter, and total joy. From the youngest baby at 3 months old to our eldest guest at 91, everyone had a ball.
The Children: Our Youngest Guests of Honour
A play area was set up for the children, but as any parent knows, little ones make their own rules — and instead, they had the time of their lives running freely, giggling, and being dotingly fussed over by the Soroptimist ladies. It was chaotic, joyful, and absolutely wonderful.
A Region United in Service
Representatives from eight SI clubs across the Region came together for this event — proving once again that when women unite, extraordinary things happen. From hugs and laughter to thoughtful conversations and shared dance steps, this event will be remembered not only for its fun, but for the sense of belonging it created.
