July 2024 – Orange Cafe – Tea & Temptations! – Climate Action

Orange Cafe – 25 July 2024

Woking Soroptimists are raising awareness about violence to women and girls in Woking

Tea & Temptations!

The July weather outside was no fun at all, but it didn’t rain on our parade!

Our Fashion Show with Afternoon Tea on 6 July 2024 was a great success.  Summer clothes from Phase 8, Mad Jak and Bisou Boutique.  Clever upcycling of clothes from Liaise Women’s Centre. Delicious cakes, scones and sandwiches.  Tempting things to buy.

Proceeds go to Surrey Care Trust and Hersham Football Club Women and Girls

Sustainable Fashion

We all love fashion, and variety is the spice of life – but what about the effect on the environment and climate change?  By the fabrics we choose, by keeping clothes for longer, by making and repairing what we wear, we can help to reduce the negative effects.

These considerations are part of Tea & Temptations 2024.

For example: Phase Eight offers collections based on linen, recycled and responsibly-sourced cotton and viscose (wood-based). Bisou Boutique emphasises long-lasting quality in its ranges of clothes and accessories.  As well as ready-made garments, Mad Jak offer haberdashery, alteration, professional tailoring and styling – all of which help us to keep our clothes looking good for longer.  And Liaise Women’s Centre sets an inspiring example by transforming old clothes into desirable wear.

Climate Action

Ellen Pirie, Co-Chair of Woking Environment Action (We-Act) came to speak to us at our July Social Meeting.

Ellen told us about how We-Act was set up, its aims and actions.  It is a registered charity and has several active projects in Woking.

One of these, the Repair Café, is extremely successful.  The repair rate is very high and all visitors report satisfaction with the service.  Visit the We-Act website to see when the Repair Café is in your area.

Ellen discussed with us the actions, large and small, that we can all take to reduce the effects of climate change.  Something we must all try to do, so that, as she said, we can tell ou grandchildren that we really did our best to give them a better life.
