Cambridge Women’s Aid provides information, advice and support to women and children affected by domestic violence, including a safe refuge in Cambridge.
We have supported Cambridge Women’s Aid for many years, in a variety of ways.
Many women arrive at the refuge with little more than the clothes they stand up in. Our fundraising activities have provided the refuge with brand new items for new arrivals, including dressing gowns, toiletries, towels and knickers of every type, from thongs to big pants. The refuge’s manager tells us that being given new items helps new arrivals feel valued and welcome. Below, two of our members model dressing gowns from the selection purchased.
As residents move on from the refuge to a new home of their own they are given a “Bucket of Help”, put together by our members. The buckets contain items such as household cleaning products, toilet brushes, mops, cloths, tea towels and dusters and enable the recipients to clean their new home, giving them a feeling of ownership. A previous donation of small toolkits also proved invaluable to those moving into new homes.
Demand for the services provided by Cambridge Women’s Aid increased substantially as a result of the UK’s COVID-19 lockdown, and we were able to provide a substantial cash donation to support their work, enabling them to quickly purchase appropriate goods for the women they were supporting, according to individual circumstances.
