Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 Glasgow hosted the 20th Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 3 August. Members of Glasgow City were involved as ‘Clydesiders’, Hosts and Spectators, but the star of the show as far as the club was concerned was Moira Ord who carried the baton . Club members Bernadette, Janneke and President Fiona are pictured at the ‘Big Green Box’ in Glasgow on Wednesday 23 July 2014. The box was about forced street crime. They collected over 360 signatures for a petition asking Kenny McAskill for a specific Scottish bill on trafficking.
Pictured is the Tomorrow Women Banner which was unveiled at the launch of Tomorrow’s Women Glasgow which took place at the Adelphi Centre Glasgow on Wednesday 25th June 2014. Tomorrow’s Women Glasgow is an innovative and unique Multi Agency Scottish Government funded Centre based in Gorbals Glasgow. It works with women with complex needs who are involved in the Criminal Justice system. It offers a safe place to talk about their needs and to address issues that prevent them from living positive, healthy lives. SI Glasgow City are working in partnership with the Centre which includes providing much needed food items and toiletries on a regular basis. The key speaker at the launch was Kenny McAskill, Cabinet Secretary for Justice at the Scottish Parliament.
Glasgow City Council honoured Soroptimist International President Ann Garvie at a reception in the City Chambers on Wednesday 11 December 2013. President Ann is a member of Soroptimist International Glasgow City. Bailie Margot Clark, representing The Lord Provost congratulated Ann on her international role and said: “Wherever there are strong women, there is hope. It’s a privilege to have an institution like Soroptimist International in our city. I am a great supporter of their values and life-changing work.”
Members of Glasgow City Club had an enjoyable and informative time at the Federation Conference in Newcastle Gatehead at the beginning of November. We made many new friends and caught up with some ‘older’ ones. Everyone agreed that this was one of the best conferences to date.
S. I. Glasgow City is proud to have the new International President, Ann Garvie, as a member of our Club. Ann has been a hard working member of Glasgow City and the former Glasgow West club for many years, and we all know that she will make a real contribution to Soroptimism during her presidency.
