Over several years Soroptimist International of Halifax has supported a women’s refuge by providing advent calendars and toiletries at Christmas and chocolate eggs for the children at Easter.
Since 2015 the refuge has been our main project.. Speakers from the refuge were invited to a meeting to ascertain the refuge’s needs. We learnt that clients can and do arrive at the refuge with just the clothes they are wearing and the children may have had to leave their toys and books behind.
We identified toiletries,clothing and basic foodstuff as essentials and subsequently set about assembling welcome packs of toiletries. Periodically good quality toys and books are donated.
We are encouraged to purchase additional basic items for the larder when doing the weekly supermarket shop: tea, coffee, rice, pasta, tins, etc. We are regularly updated by the refuge of clients’ current needs.
To ensure security of the refuge just one member has contact details to arrange for donations to be collected.
