Orange The World March

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and joined us on on Saturday 22nd November for our Orange The World March through St Helier, standing together for the elimination of violence against women and girls. Kate Wright CEO of Freeda, gave a heartfelt speech at the end of the March, back at West’s Centre. “We will not be silenced”. We wear orange to show our outrage that violence against women and girls still continues, but the colour orange also signifies our hope for the future. Join us next November, all are welcome.

On the 25th November Soroptimist International Jersey will join with her sister clubs worldwide to acknowledge the official  UN day commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls.  We will promote 16 days of Activism concluding on Human Rights Day on the 10th December.  We propose to walk through town on the preceding Saturday – 22nd November.  Gender based violence is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights’ violations in our world today, and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline.  It affects women regardless of their age, background or level of education.  It takes many forms, including physical, sexual or psychological violence, as well as  economic abuse and exploitation. The colour Orange has been chosen to represent our outrage at the violence being perpetrated, but also to signal our hope and

This morning, Tuesday 11th November, 2025, Deputy Louise Doublet asked a question regarding equality impact evaluation in the States Assembly. Here is the statement she made following the session: ‘The Equality Impact Assessment which was put in place in 2023 by myself and Deputies Jeune & Miles, should be embedded in the policy formation process and indeed the Chief Minister confirmed today that it is. I agree with the Soroptimists that this should be made more transparent and I am also pleased that the Chief Minister agreed to meet with them to take on board their views on the Equality Impact Process.’ Deputy Hilary Jeune asked if the Chief Minister could commit to publishing the results of equality impact evaluations to which the Chief Minister responded that he would discuss this with his officials and colleagues. Despite stating that he believed a reply had been

OPEN LETTER to Deputy Lyndon Farnham, Chief Minister of Jersey Dear Deputy Farnham, On behalf of Soroptimist International Jersey (SIJ), I am pleased to share the latest Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) position paper on mandatory Gender Impact Assessments. This paper can be found by clicking on the link below. I also attach the UK Press Release. https://sigbi.org/assets/SIGBI-Position-Paper-on-Gender-Impact-Assessments-June-2025.pdf  Soroptimist International Jersey calls on the Government of Jersey to implement mandatory Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs) following proven models from Wales and Scotland. This framework outlines how Jersey can address these gaps through legislative reform and systematic implementation. The primary goal is to advocate for government at all levels to make gender impact assessments a compulsory part of decision-making processes. This would ensure systematic assessment of how policies and decisions affect women and girls.  Wales has successfully embedded gender considerations through Integrated Impact Assessments and

The Club was delighted to be the first supporter of the Highlands College Foundation. The Club donates £4,500 annually specifically for women and girls taking STEM subjects: Building Services, Automotive, Building Trades, Digital Games Development, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering & Welding. It is beneficial for us all if there is more diversity in these areas of work. Six female students were helped in 2025 including three donations of laptops, which were presented to the students by Club members in February.

Joining forces with the Jersey Reuse Revolution since 2021 (originally named Jersey Sustainable Period Products Project) our aim is to provide every Year 6 girl in the Island with a eco-friendly washable period pad. The bags are kindly delivered to every Primary School in the Island by the Children, Young People, Education & Skills Department in March each year. The bags are given to the girls during a PSHE lesson so conversations can be started and questions can be answered by their teachers. Comments from some of the girls at Helvetia School in 2025 include: “I love the colours!” “They’re squishy, they turn into an envelope!” “They look comfortable, they save the environment, they’re portable in the bag!” “They’re soft!” “They’re washable!”
