Covid-19 Response 2020

The global pandemic of 2020 brought many challenges for people.  In response to this Leigh Soroptimists wanted to maintain our commitment to help where we can to support the women, girls and families in our community. Easter eggs: In partnership with The Bridge at Leigh we collected and delivered a car boot full of Easter Eggs for the children in a local Women’s Refuge. We were able to ensure that they were able to enjoy and celebrate Easter in the traditional way that children do. Supporting the women’s refuge: Our long standing link with the Refuge to provide ‘Dignity Bags’ for the women when they arrive has also been maintained throughout the pandemic, and through our Kindness Project we have provided extra toiletries and period products.   The Basic Kindness Project:   Our support for local women and families through the local Start Well Centres,

Leigh & District Soroptimist Club are celebrating following the Government’s decision this week to provide menstrual products to all secondary and primary schools in England from 2020. Leigh Club has locally coordinated the Red Box Project with support from members of Tyldesley & Leigh Inner Wheel Clubs.  The nationwide project aims to end Period Poverty by enabling girls to attend school who may not have the resources to obtain sanitary items. This community driven project has involved organising 16 Donation points across the area, through the goodwill of businesses, where members of the community can donate menstrual products and underwear, which are then placed in Red Boxes and delivered to schools.  Regular topping-up has been undertaken to 32 secondary and primary schools; and now the project has been extended to community hubs in the area to provide out of school provision.  The response from schools

Woman Zone – 23rd June 2018

On a sunny, if slightly windy!!! June day, our Woman Zone event in Leigh Civic Square brought together many local organisations and services.  The event was ‘declared open’ by Federation President Sue and we were visited by Wigan Mayor Sue Greensmith and her Consort Allen Greensmith.   There was plenty of interest from the local community and our Soroptimist Membership and Project stalls saw lots of queries about our organisation.  The Parish Church Vestry was manned by Leigh Soroptimists who did a sterling job of providing, tea, coffee, cake and toast to all who visited including our VIP guests, Soroptimists and stall holders.      See below for lots more photos from this fantastic event!

Several members from SI Leigh were in attendance as stewards at the annual Leigh Carnival – a well attended carnival by the local community. We were treated to a parade and carnival atmosphere on a rare hot sunny Sunday.   SI Leigh had a stall at the carnival promoting Soroptimist, our forthcoming Woman Zone event and other ongoing SI Leigh projects including Toilet Twinning – hence the Wishing Well toilet!!
