Why were the Soroptimists at the Chatham Carnival with Amnesty International?

On a cold and blustery Saturday in July, Janet Garnons-Williams and Carol McKeough, from Medway and Maidstone supported the Chatham community carnival by helping on the Amnesty International stall. The carnival is part of Medway Culture Fest 24 celebrating Medway’s community, creativity and history.

It was a very interesting and fun event, but the weather was destined to have its say. The very strong gusts of winds followed by the torrential rain that did not daunt the enthusiasm of the crowds watching the parade.

Seeing the many banners that included those celebrating the lives of Kent and Medway women, such as Verena Holmes (mechanical engineer) and Dame Kathleen Courtney (suffragist).

Janet and Carol encouraged people to sign up to the local group, but particularly to sign a letter to our new MP’s, pledging to protect human rights. They collected over 2 sheets of signatures for the MP letter and 15 for the Amnesty International mailing list.

This builds support for our longstanding partnership with Amnesty.
