An afternoon tea in Hutton Rudby to raise funds for a women-driven pink tuk tuk in Sri Lanka was well attended by Soroptimists from around the north of England and raised around £1000. The money will go towards The Rosie May Foundation which runs several projects in Sri Lanka. Founders Graham and Mary Storrie attended and spoke about how they had set up the Foundation as a lasting memorial to their daughter, Rosie May, who was murdered on 28th December 2003 at the age of 10. Her mantra had been “girl power”. Entertainment was kindly provided by Jeanette Wainwright with her choir of 40 voices, and help was given by many friends and supporters, especially some of Hutton Rudby’s Girl Guides who served at tables and replenished plates of food.
Soroptimist Middlesbrough President Pam Cooper stated, “This was a tremendous success. Everyone enjoyed the fine food and entertainment. Credit goes especially to Geraldine who masterminded the catering and to Pauline whose project this is. We appreciate support from so many friends from across the area including representatives from Hutton Rudby’s Girl Guides and Brownies. (see www.rosie-may.com)
