Collection for Tools for Self-Reliance Cymru

On two Saturdays in September our members banded together to undertake a leaflet drop, (1st Saturday) followed by a collection, (3rd Saturday) in aid of Tools for Self-Reliance Cymru.  One of our clubs ongoing charity link projects.

Tools for Self-Reliance is a UK-based charitable organisation that works to empower artisans and tradespeople in developing countries, such as Africa.  It does this by providing them with tools, skills, and training. The charity was founded in 1979 and operates on the principle that;

poverty can be tackled more effectively by supporting people to help themselves.

Our collection drive was Headed by Phil Pope the charities workshop supervisor and equipment maintenance specialist, (and all-round hard worker).  Our members collected a huge van load of old tools, sewing machines, textiles etc.  The items will be refurbished and utilised in one of two ways.  Most are sent on to start new lives in Africa becoming vital parts of the communities.  Occasionally, those that are not appropriate for sending, such as electric lawnmowers are sold.   The money raised from these is then used to cover shipping costs or additional projects.  One of the charities current projects is to build a workshop in Kalwande.  Hopefully this workshop can refurbish tools and help to train locals.

Tools for Self-Reliance Cymru is one of our Club’s focus Projects and we look forward to our annual collection drive’s.  If you would like to know more about Tools for Self-reliance Cymru please follow the link;
