On the evening of 22nd January, Soroptimist International Port Talbot enjoyed a very inspiring speaker evening with Liliana Vandyk, founder of Children First Kenya.
During the evening, Liliana shared the powerful story behind the creation of the charity, which she set up in 2009, and spoke passionately about the work being carried out to support vulnerable children in Kenya. Children First Kenya is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children by providing access to education, safe accommodation, nutritious meals, healthcare and emotional support.
Liliana explained how the charity works closely with local communities to ensure that children who might otherwise miss out on schooling or basic care are given the opportunity to learn, grow and build brighter futures. Through sponsorship, community support and fundraising, the organisation is able to provide school places, essential supplies and ongoing care for children who need it most.
An important part of the charity’s work is also raising awareness about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and supporting efforts to protect girls from this harmful practice. Through education, community outreach and engagement with families and local leaders, Children First Kenya works to increase understanding of the dangers and long-term impacts of FGM. By promoting education and empowering girls, the charity aims to help communities move away from this practice and ensure that girls can grow up healthy, safe and able to pursue their education.
Our members were deeply moved by Liliana’s presentation and the personal stories she shared about the children whose lives have been transformed through the charity’s work. The evening was both inspiring and thought-provoking, highlighting the importance of global solidarity and the impact that committed individuals and organisations can make.
Soroptimist International Port Talbot would like to thank Liliana for taking the time to visit and share her experience. Events like this help raise awareness of important causes and strengthen the Soroptimist commitment to supporting women, children and communities around the world.
