Water Water Everywhere – not a drop to spare. UN Water Day

SI Port Talbot gathered together to celebrate UN Water Day, officially known as World Water Day. Members were treated to a water buffet at fellow soroptimist ‘Peggy’s’ home.  UN Water Day is observed every year on March 22. It was established by the United Nations in 1993 to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

During our get together we were presented with a very thought-provoking talk on water given by Elizabeth followed by a quiz.  All proceeds from the day were donated to Water Aid.

Each year, World Water Day focuses on a specific theme related to freshwater (e.g., water and climate change, groundwater, accelerating change, leaving no one behind).  This year’s theme focused on “Glacier Preservation”, highlighting the urgent need to safeguard glaciers amidst accelerating melting driven by global warming Water United.

This theme emphasizes how rapidly melting glaciers disrupt water cycles, threatening:

Floods, droughts, landslides

Sea level rise

Water security for billions

Glaciers act as critical regulators of melt-water, supporting drinking water, agriculture, hydro-power, ecosystems, and more. Their loss endangers these systems on a global scale
