Barbara Dixon Environment Award 2022

New  Programme Action Barbara Dixon Award 

Theme 2022  –  Climate Change Act Now  from Local to Global

This was the first year in which the award was launched and SI Rhyl & District club won it for our Environmental Project work which included:-

Bee Project

Past President Sylvia receives the Award on behalf of Club
  • Worked with the Welsh and Conwy Beekeeping Associations to develop a project to promote the importance of Honey Bees to the environment and food chain.
  • Visited 10/12 schools every year for 9 years delivering hands-on ‘Bring Back the Bees’ workshops and making presentations to local community groups
  • Funded an Apiary in a school in Uganda to help them to learn about bees and sell honey to raise funds towards the building of a dormitory for girls which SI Rhyl & District is continuing to support financially
  • Set up a club Apiary producing honey and other related products to sell in order to help fund the school workshops. Bee friendly flowers were planted near the Apiary to encourage pollination
  • Attended local shows to sell our products and promote our project and the plight of the bees

Hospital Garden Project

  • Extended our environmental work in 2022 to successfully re-develop a large courtyard garden at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. 
  • Worked closely with the hospital’s estates team and students from Coleg Cambria Horticultural Department in Northop. 
  • The project is aimed at providing a beautiful tranquil space for the wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors.

Re-cycling Initiative

  • Collect plastic bottle tops which are made into garden furniture at a local factory
  • Collect crisp packets which are made into sleeping bags for the homeless
