Courtyard Garden Project at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd

Wales in Bloom Neighbourhood Award 2024

We were awarded a (Level 4 – Thriving) for our re-development and continued maintenance of the Courtyard Garden at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.  The Wales in Bloom committee had received record entries this year and  the Award Ceremony was hosted by Abergavenny Town Council on Friday 13th September at the Angel Hotel.  We were thrilled to be nominated and recognised for our commitment to the garden.

Project Description of Activities:

  • The project was initiated by Soroptimist International Rhyl & District to design and restructure the garden courtyard area outside of the cafeteria.
  • The aim of the project was to provide a garden area that benefits patients, hospital visitors and staff during times of high emotion, uncertainty, stress and potential anguish.
  • Such areas have a positive impact on users and can contribute to patient’s recovery, mindfulness and wellbeing.
  • We met with the tutor and students at Coleg Cambria Horticultural Department to discuss ideas and designs for the garden.
  • The students visited the courtyard garden and measured the plots and took soil samples.
  • A design and planting scheme was agreed.
  • The maintenance staff at the hospital prepared the ground and laid sleepers in order to raise the flower beds.
  • Regular ongoing maintenance of the Courtyard Garden is undertaken by volunteer members of SI Rhyl & District.

Working in partnership with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, the Horticultural Section of Coleg Cambria, together with funding from Conwy Voluntary Services Council,  Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council and the Rhyl Community Partnership.
