St. Vincent & The Grenadines Sewing Project

SDG: 17, 8

Number of Beneficiaries: 15 women

The eruption of the Mt Soufriere volcano on the island of St Vincent in April 2021 resulted in destruction to property, damage to crops and livestock and displaced thousands of persons. Persons who lived within the “red zone” i.e. closet to the volcano were most affected and had to be evacuated. The eruption also caused heavy ashfall to affect neighbouring Eastern Caribbean states including Barbados, Dominica and St Lucia. The population of SVG required immediate relief in the form of safe drinking water, emergency food assistance, health supplies, hygiene and sanitation supplies, personal protective equipment and livelihood support for recovery and rehabilitation.

Our club received a donation of TTD$20,000 and decided to use this money to assist in rebuilding the lives of women who lived close to or within the “red zone” and who had lost their livelihood. After discussion with Shannon Durant the Programme Action Officer of SISVG we decided that a sewing course to train and provide these women with a new skill set would be the best course of action. We provided the funds to purchase sewing machines and sewing kits whilst SISVG secured a venue, sewing tutor and transportation for the women.
