Region Meeting
Ann Gourlay led a thought-provoking session asking what do the words Stepping Up and Taking the Lead mean to you. Working as individuals and small groups it was soon clear that while different images were evoked all considered that it was coming out of the comfort zone and that successful leadership was only possible with the positive support of others.
Our speaker was Elsie Normington who shared that story of her son Andrew. He at the age of four started having severe epileptic attacks which led to his mental deterioration. As a result of both her son’s and her own isolation as his condition deteriorated she started a support group for parents and a play centre for severely handicapped children. She has set up the Elsie Normington Foundation to raise funds to build a specialist play centre, respite facility, coffee shop and supported housing for children and young adults with learning and physical disabilities. The site for the Haven Centre has already been purchased and fund-raising is going well.
