Reuse, Recycle and Our Planet

Reuse, Recycle and Our Planet

in

The recent Cop 26 Climate Conference in Glasgow really concentrated minds on the dire state that we, as human beings, have placed our planet and its future for life as we know it.  It would be easy to despair in the face of what our western nations have done since the Industrial Revolution and how the emerging nations now feel thay must catch up in a similar fashion.  We can all contribute in small ways to averting a climate crisis for future generations however. Reusable bags were sewn and put together by our oldest members pamela Brown, and given over to St Ann’s Hospice for sale in their shop, to aid raising much needed funds. Pamela is not new to recycling, have had a display of hats constructed/knitted  from old plastic bags exhibited at the Hat Works hat museum here in Stockport – Stockport of

Time goes sooooo quickly, doesn’t it?!  October 2024 saw us all back at the Alma Lodge Hotel here in Stockport for our annual Charter Lunch.  This year we were delighted to welcome Mayor Cllr Suzanne Wyatt and representatives of the local projects that SI Stockport are supporting.   The 2022 Charter Lunch was held at the Alma Lodge here in Stockport and was enjoyed and well attended by members, guests and dignitaries alike. October 2021 saw SI Stockport hold their ‘annual’ Charter lunch – the first time in 2 years given the on-going pandemic.  Adhering to all the recommended Covid-19 safety measures over 60 people attended the Alma Lodge Hotel.  Along with Club members we were joined by Soroptimists from nearby Clubs and from across the Region.

Friendship with SI Guernsey and island as a whole continue to thrive despite of pandemic problems. The tree planted in 2011 by the then President’s of SI Guernsey and Stockport continues to thrive and was re-visited recently by SI Stockport member Marilyn Westbrook who had been Club President at the time of the tree planting.  Thrive is the word – see below!   The tree was planted in 2011 to mark the then 70th anniversary of the evacuation of children from Guernesy to Stockport in 1941.

Stockport’s SI Club has just answered a saucy request from Wellspring, to provide mayonnaise and brown sauce to go with the meals that Wellspring provide for the homeless in Stockport.  And here is an artistic arrangement of same. SI Stockport responded to a website request from Wellspring by donating funds to purchase household items as shown below.  Wellspring still serves hot food from ‘door to table’ as clients cannot enter the premises and a SIS member has been domating pot based foods like noodles, porridge and soups for people who do not have a microwave but do have access to a kettle. The homeless and/or deprived in Stockport continue to receive support from Wellspring, regardless of pandemics, tiers, lockdowns or the weather.  Our member Pamela has been busy knitting warm clothing items for distribution via Wellspring as well as seasonal objects – like Xmas Puds,
