Presentation on Nepal

Club members were treated to a very interesting talk by Tori Griffiths, founding trustee of House of Hope in Kathmandu, at last night’s meeting. The aim of the orphanage was to educate; enable and empower the children to develop skills for adult life.

Many years ago Tori, with the support of other trustees and supporters, raised funds to buy a plot of land which cost so much they had to move the money from the bank in a wheelbarrow! They employed the services of the only female architect to graduate in Nepal who designed them what looked like a palace. It was built to withstand an earthquake and the doubling of the cost proved to be a good investment as it remained standing after last years earthquake.

More recently the House of Hope charity has been merged into Global Action Nepal whose main aim is to improve the quality of education and to provide basic health to the unreached children of Nepal whilst using a sustainable holistic development approach where there are meaningful partnerships with all stakeholders. All of GAN’s projects are grounded in the key principles of the “Education for All”.
