Club members were treated to a very interesting talk by Tori Griffiths, founding trustee of House of Hope in Kathmandu, at last night’s meeting. The aim of the orphanage was to educate; enable and empower the children to develop skills for adult life. Many years ago Tori, with the support of other trustees and supporters, raised funds to buy a plot of land which cost so much they had to move the money from the bank in a wheelbarrow! They employed the services of the only female architect to graduate in Nepal who designed them what looked like a palace. It was built to withstand an earthquake and the doubling of the cost proved to be a good investment as it remained standing after last years earthquake.
