We always hold a summer social in August to raise funds for our club charity. This year our theme was characters from books, to celebrate the International Year of Reading. As always, the outfits showed great creativity and imagination. Some old favourites were there – Mary Poppins and Heidi amongst them. There were also some who are perhaps less well known; have you met Elizabeth Zott and Griet? Their identities are revealed at the end of this post if you haven’t.
An amazing £242 was raised for three local baby banks which provide essential support for women and families in our local area. Thank you to everyone, and to Vivianne and John for hosting again this year. The best outfit award went to The Cat in the Hat (aka Jo).
Elizabeth Zott is the main character in Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Gamus. I love this book and it you’ve not read it, put it on your reading list. Griet appears in Tracy Chevalier’s novel, Girl with a Pearl Earring, inspired by Vermeer’s painting. Did you know that she researched and wrote this lovely book in just 8 months? Tracy Chevalier was pregnant and so had what she calls a ‘biological deadline’.
