Six members of our club took part in another socially distanced litter pick on 10th April, this time at the Rising Sun Countryside Centre.  They collected 12 bags of rubbish; that’s another step towards meeting one of our 100+ challenges. Well done everyone. If you’re interested in joining our club so you can get involved with activities like this, please get in touch either by contacting us on 07947520109 or emailing us at sitynemouth@gmail.com

Adding to the New Start Bags

Adding to the New Start Bags

One of our on-going projects is the creation of New Start Bags.  Northumbria Police gives these emergency bags to women rescued from Modern Day slavery, sexual exploitation, human trafficking and to victims of domestic abuse. They contain essential new clothing, toiletries and day to day items. On the suggestion of Northumbria Police, we have now created additional care packs and hygiene packs containing underwear, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothpaste and masks. These are given to victims of rape and sexual assault after they have undergone necessary medical examination. Thanks must go to all our members for their work in raising funds to allow us to support women in this way.

As part of our celebrations for the centenary of Soroptimist International our members have set themselves some challenges. Can we collect, donate or make a minimum of 100 items over the course of 2021 to support charities and our local community?   Here's the list of our monthly projects. Targets for January and February have already been exceeded and we raised £300 in the Easter raffle. Collecting/making/doing is well under way for the rest of the projects so do visit our website again for an update on how we are doing. SI Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District is proud to support Harbour in North Tyneside, a charity which works with local families and individuals who are affected by abuse from a partner, former partner or other family member. Recently, we delivered Mother's Day gifts for 17 mums supported by Harbour; they all received a mug, hand cream and a nail file, all beautifully wrapped by member Sue. A TEACHING TEDDY - who would have thought that one of Anne's 50 hand knitted teddies would get emmployment! A nursery teacher in a school in County Durham has a little helper. Every day this nursery teacher does her morning routine with the children about staying safe with Blue Bear as her helper. She starts every session talking about 4 things: (1)stay safe with our space - Blue Bear is always high up as he is social distancing (2)wash our hands lots of times (3)catch our coughs (4)catch our sneezes She then reminds the children that if they need clean or dry clothes or hurt themselves, she will put on a mask, apron and gloves like Blue Bear. She puts on each item and points out Blue Bear's mask and apron as she does. She says it's working well as the children relate to her

Our annual Safari Supper BRIEF was THRIFT in keeping with our ENVIRONMENTAL theme. Outfits to be: borrowed, from the back of the wardrobe, no more that £10 spent at a charity shop. Based on a Downton Abbey theme with prizes for Best Upstairs and Best Downstairs ensembles members made such an effort. We thought long and hard about the buffet aiming for not much food waste. £400 was raised for Food Poverty in our local area (more about this later!) Sue joined us via Messenger! Shared winners of Best Dressed Downstairs Louise S & Karen H and they stayed in role all evening! Liz – winner of Best Dressed Upstairs Who’s that sneaking into my stables now? Is it that Lady Mary? Again?!

Our club has adopted the ENVIRONMENT as our theme for the year starting with raising awareness about the amount of plastics, especially SINGLE USE PLASTIC, we use. So what have we done so far? Several members saved the plastics used for 7 days and were willing to display for our perusal – we were shocked!! Next step – members have set a target to follow until our next meeting in September when we will review.

Sandra Graham, Margaret Hall, John O’Shea, Jo Kirwin, our local councillors spent several minutes listening to members chat about the important work we do for our local community and of course further afield. It was a wonderful opportunity to network and what was awesome was the interest in our club and how many people had heard of THE SOROPTIMISTS!! How amazing is that?!
