We are all so excited to see photos of our tuk tuk being handed over to the designated driver, Shoba.
The official ceremony took place on the 20th May. As Shoba is the first woman tuk tuk driver in Nepal, it was a big deal and so there was an official handing over ceremony from the mayor and other officials.
Shobha has been driving the tuk tuk and has become quite a celebrity! She is doing well and enjoying her new role. She has already taken a few women in labour to the hospital who would have otherwise had to walk there!
Shobha B.K is a single mother residing at Bheriganga-12, Chhinchu, Surkhet. She is an inspiring woman who has dedicated her life to both her family and community. Despite facing economic challenges and raising two children alone, one of whom is mentally disabled, she continuously do advocacy against child marriage, polygamy, and domestic violence and to ensure the rights of the marginalized community. Shobha also supports her household through domestic work and uses her sewing and cutting skills to earn a livelihood. She lives in a government land where Bheriganga Municipality provided support to build two room house. She has completed driving training and holds a valid Auto driving license as per the Government of Nepal regulations.
She is now able to operate a taxi service for women and children allowing them to travel in safety and free from sexual harrassment, whilst at the same time, earning a living for her and her two children.
