In 2021 #Soroptimists will ‘Plant Trees for a Brilliant Future”. Even though #Soroptimists can’t meet in person yet, #WorldEnvironmentDay is a great day for #PlantTrees planning. Kate Fussel valued and long term member of Soroptimist International Wigan was honoured by Wigan Borough when she received a star at Wigan Town Hall on March 12th. Kate who is 90 was Wigan’s first female surgeon and  was at one time one of only six in the country, she was awarded her star as part of the towns International Women’s Day celebrations. She was surrounded by friends, members of SI Wigan and other South Lancashire Soroptimist International Clubs. She is a past club President, South Lancashire President and International President for SIGBI in 1986.

Louise Layland (1960-2020) Our much loved friend and fellow Soroptimist passed away, peacefully, on Friday 29th May 2020 after privately battling cancer for some time. She had been a member of SI Wigan for 12 years and served as our President in 2012-2013, and on both the PAC and Social Committees for many years. Louise was a dedicated Soroptimist who embraced every aspect of our mission. She was ‘committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities world wide.’ She was a born organiser, natural leader, champion fundraiser and friend to all in our club, and indeed clubs in the region and overseas. Nothing was ever too much trouble for her and she gave of her time freely and compassionately. Her presence and support brightened up

The Annual Soroptimist International Wigan Young Achiever Award was given to Caitlin Touhey by Wigan Mayor Councillor Steve Dawber at Wigan Town Hall on December 13th 2019. Caitlin was presented with her award for outstanding achievement in Business skills, volunteering, supporting others at school, college and university, taking an active part in many sports and athletic activities. She has also published articles in the Manchester Historian. Present were SI Wigan President Angela Holmes, Caitlin’s parents and members of SI Wigan
