Loud & Proud
SI Croydon & District’s Public Speaking Competition for Year 6 girls
Launched in 2008, this annual competition seeks to engender self confidence, improve communication skills and ultimately encourage girls to play a more prominent role in public life.
How does it fulfil the Soroptimist goals?
It empowers – giving girls the confidence to speak publicly
It enables – we give them the means to showcase their skills
It educates – it encourages the girls to research their chosen subject
The judges’ task always proves challenging when presented with such interesting and intelligent speeches, delivered with great determination, passion and courage by these 10 and 11 year olds.
On Friday 11th March, our Loud & Proud event took place after the pandemic postponements. 12 year 6 girls from 6 schools competed and we were all filled with pride to hear their incredible submissions. There were 4 judges including our regional president Yvonne Freeman with the Mayor of Croydon in attendance. Favoured topics were The Pandemic and Our Hero/Heroine. First prize went to Shwetika Arun from St Peter’s Primary School with My “Expectations if I were to join a women’s group like the Soroptimists”
