The Great Tapestry of Scotland

SI Edinburgh are very proud to have been involved with the national project, instigated by author Alexander McCall Smith and inspired by the Prestonpans Tapestry.

The tapestry was designed for significant periods of Scottish history,  and our panel particularly the part played by women;  each panel was distributed to groups of stitchers around Scotland.

The SI Edinburgh members responsible in the main for completing this piece of work were Winifred Keeves, Edith Elliot, Jane Green, Isabel Smith and Clephane Hume.

Our panel depicts ‘Women get the Vote’ and features Suffragettes of Scotland with the Soroptimist International GBI logo in a smaller right hand bottom corner panel.

The whole work appeared at the Scottish Parliament and following a tour has now found a permanent purpose built home in Galashiels, in the Scottish borders. SI Edinburgh is delighted that the Gallery has chosen to feature our panel on cards, postcards and a number of small gifts on sale in the shop.

A book has been published to accompany this achievement.
