90th Charter Weekend – What a fantastic time on Saturday

President Pat welcoming guests to our Across the Decades Film Show

What a wonderful weekend we had on 14-15th October. It started out with the Premier of our specially commission film about the history of the Club over the last 90 yrs.  This took place while we ate afternoon tea at the Crown Hotel in Harrogate. Soroptimist International President Maureen Maguire and Soroptimist International President of  Great Britain and Ireland Cathy Cottridge honoured us with their presence. Also, Members from our friendship links from Arlon in Belgium and Milford Haven in Wales.  We then rocked the night away to the music of Last Orders at the Masonic Hall in Harrogate. And, finally we celebrated our Charter Lunch on Sunday with over 100 guests on in the presence of the Lord Lieutenant  of North Yorkshire. A very memorable weekend.

Premier of Film and Book to Celebrate 90th Charter Anniversary

The Crown Hotel in Harrogate provided the perfect setting for our specially commissioned Film and its accompanying book.  It is the place we meet and also the place that hosted many events over the last 90 years. The film, produced by Dave Thorp helped by Club member, Christine Anderson, showcased what we have achieved over the years.  Our researchers, Nicola, Rachel, Dorothy and Judith spent many hours mulling over the Club archives. This provided the information for each decade recounted by one of our members. From the founding of the Club in the 30’s depression to today – when some things don’t change and food and energy are still in want. The film, in decade chunks, will be available on YouTube.

Rocking to the Music of Last Orders

We continued the day with a Pie and Pea supper at the Masonic Hall as Last Orders entertained us. They often say, ‘If you can remember the Sixites you werent there’! Well,  many of us in the room certainly were and yes –  most of us could sing along with all the songs. The dance floor filled as we ‘twisted, shaked and boogied’ the night away.  International President Maureen was no stranger to the dance floor as she danced with nonagenarian Elizabeth Hughes who belied her years. It was a great fun evening. Excellent music and very tasty food.
