Yesterday (July 16th) saw us all enjoying our annual charity lunch when we were able to donate the massive sum of £6000 to Paul Sartori, a local hospice at home service.  This is one of President Julia’s chosen charities for the year.

We enjoyed delicious food, wonderful company and much fun and laughter.  Entertainment came from Ian Gravell our guest speaker whose battle to walk again after a devastating car accident was inspired by the Bruce Springsteen classic “Dancing in the Dark”.  Ian has written a bestselling book entitled “Loose Gravel” about the traumatic events.  The book made such an impact on a BBC researcher when she read it that it led to Ian being featured in a Radio 4 programme about “The Boss” (Springsteen) and how he wrote the song.  Ian rounded up his contrbution to the afternoon by getting out his guitar and treating us to his own version of the song – did we sing along?  Of course we did!

Our next treat was provided by the Paul Sartori Singers very ably led by their conductor Mark Heron.  Their excellent performance was rewarded with a well deserved standing ovation.

Next we got on with the serious business of fund raising.  Ticket sales had got the ball rolling, the Raffle was generously supported with prizes from members and sponsors and, of course, those who purchased tickets on the day.  The fundraising was wrapped up with his usual good natured humour by Brian Harries our regular Charity Auctioneer.  The competitive spirit which will have been shown on the football and rugby pitches by Welsh Internationals Joe Allen and Liam Williams found its way into the auction as audience members battled to buy the various memorabilia up for grabs.  Generous donations and match funding from Barlcays Bank meant that our total reached £6000!!!!

Who knew that having such fun could be so profitable?
