Celebrating The 50th Anniversary 2012

CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY….1962-2012

During 2012 we have arranged several events in connection with our special year.

On 1st August members of the club hosted an evening held as part of the St Mary’s Church Local History Week. Current and past members and guests listened to Pat Barker describe the history of the club and its contribution to the community, illustrated by a DVD and a display of pictures taken over the years.  President Carwen spoke about the club’s international links, and Bobby Sheldrake gave a comprehensive account of recent programme Action work. Wine and refreshments were served.( These talks can be seen on this website.)

The first weekend of September saw a very successful Celebratory weekend graced by the attendance of our International President Alice Wells and members of local and friendship link clubs. A tour of St David’s Cathedral was followed by lunch in the Cathedral’s refectory, and a walk along a few miles of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. We were blessed with one of the few fine days of the summer. Tea at the Warpool Court Hotel was linked with an opportunity to view their unique display of over 3,000 heraldic and Celtic wall tiles. In the evening Ruth Howells kindly opened her home for a   fantastic supper.

On the Sunday the Club held its annual Charity Lunch at the Wolfscastle Country Hotel, an opportunity to reach our target of £7000 to provide a kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.   Almost 200 attended the event and were entertained with songs from opera and musicals sung by our singing waiters (actually students of the Performing Arts course at Pembrokeshire College) . With the generous support of Barclays Bank who match funded the raffle, the target was achieved.
