Soroptimists of Haverfordwest were approached by Kim Allen, Communities at Work within Pembrokeshire County Council after she saw one of our Soroptimists “What and who we are” leaflets.  She thought “These are the ladies who may be able to help Adama” who was one of her clients.   Adama 31, originally from the Gambia has resided in Wales for most of her life and has always dreamt of becoming a nurse but getting there was proving difficult.  Thanks to Kim, Adama was helped to apply to the NHS Apprenticeship Scheme.   From the 700 who applied, Adama was one of 16 successful applicants.  In order to complete her studies, she would need easy access to a computer to undertake her coursework alongside her work at the hospital and looking after her 4 year old son.   Soroptimists transform the lives and status of women and girls

As part of our charitable work we have, in recent years, supported the Lend With Care scheme.  We have enjoyed supporting various businesses and hearing the stories of their success as result of receiving from us a comparatively small loan. Lend with care brings together entrepreneurs in developing countries with people with the power to help them . Whether it’s opening a market stall , or opening a small tailoring business or diversifying the crops they grow , people across the developing world are bursting  with business ideas , all they need is a helping hand to get started So far Haverfordwest Soroptimists have given 11 loans to a mix of individuals and groups and through these loans we have helped 63 entrepreneurs , 283 family members and created 6 jobs . The entrepreneurs we have lent to are from Rwanda, Vietnam,Pakistan, Malawi and Cambodia

We are delighted to be supporting St Mark’s VA School in their STEM education.  A donation is being made which will be applied to support their Outdoor Education project.  A polytunnel has been erected on the school grounds and will be used to grow produce and also to carry out scientific investigations, looking at environmental issues that affect us locally and in the wider world.  Our support will also help fund site visits to other interesting local projects thereby maximising learning opportunities. Local businesses also supporting the project include Puffin Produce, LNG and First Milk.

We were delighted to be featured in the Western Telegraph on 28th April 2021 for our tree planting efforts!  Haverfordians continue their ambitious aim of turning the town into a ‘tree utopia’. Soroptimist International planted 340 trees over three days on the Lower Racecourse in Haverfordwest on three days between Tuesday, April 20 and Sunday, April 25. The trees, when added to another 80 trees recently planted, make a total of 420 trees planted by SI Haverfordwest this year. Soroptimist International Haverfordwest was one of the lucky participants in a research project run by Coastal Communities Adapting Together (CCAT) aiming to support coastal communities in understanding climate change and how to adapt. A variety of indigenous broad leaved trees were donated to participants for planting at suitable sites. A spokesperson from SI Haverfordwest said: “We were delighted to be able to work with CCAT and
