A lovely surprise awaited our club after Christmas when we received presents from Bangladesh charity TARANGO. We have supported this charity for the last three years. Each member was given a small bag made by the women from the charity along with a card wishing us all health and happiness.
Our member Linda spent her winter days on holiday in the Caribbean where she came across this sign. It’s good to see that our organization is being recognized everywhere.
At our March supper meeting, we were very privileged to have Dr. Benjamin Holloway, a Consultant Specialist Radiologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, who is the son of one of our members. He gave an extremely detailed presentation of the process of all forms of scanning. All members were captivated and he highlighted the importance of keeping active and a positive mental attitude to keep negativity and depression at bay. Here we see an extremely proud mom with her highly talented son- Dr Benjamin Holloway.
On 5th march we attended the AGM meeting of Homestart a local charity we support throughout the year with several deliveries of women and children’s clothes -boots – shoes – toys. It was good to see our name in their programme. Our talented Sewing Sisters have been very busy as usual. They have produced Mastectomy Bags for Russell Hall Hospital for patients after surgery.
Also using donated fabric they have made Welcome Bags for our local refuge. We filled them with products as you can see in the photo below. The manager Claire, was thrilled
to receive them and we will continue to make them as an ongoing programme action project.
We held our yearly Bridge Event in April where we raised £850 for Wyre Forest Citizens Bureau. We provided lunch for 70 people. All the hours of planning -organising-baking-preparing and buying ingredients paid off on the day with ten cakes freshly made by Lynn Ravenhill- a trusted friend to us all. Quotes from players read-‘That was the best lunch by far compared to other bridge events’ and ‘a lovely lunch- quality food and excellent cakes’
Also happening in the last week was the club’s contribution to The Rose Theatre in Kidderminster. We have purchased two small trees to display outside the front door to promote the work we do for Women and Girls with the large tree representing Women (hence the curves) and the smaller depicting Girls. Members of the stage builders very kindly made us a beautiful wooden planter for the trees and the theatre management paid for a plaque which will promote Soroptimism for many years. It is a profitable partnership for everyone with at least two of our members volunteering at the theatre.
